Review: A Woman Overwhelmed

A Woman Overwhelmed
By Hayley DiMarco
Abingdon Press, 2017

Summary

"A Woman Overwhelmed" is a phrase with which many women can relate.

But what would happen if we could see the insanity in our pace and embrace our overwhelming God?

There is a reason they say that a woman's work is never done- because it isn't! As women, we often are overwhelmed by the demands and circumstances of life, resulting in stress, fear, worry, impatience, fatigue, frustration, and even depression. The truth is that we were created to be overwhelmed . . . not by life but by God! When we learn to be overwhelmed by God, the fruit in our lives goes from rotten to fragrant-filling our days with peace, hope, love, and joy.

In A Woman Overwhelmed, best-selling author Hayley DiMarco shares biblical insights and personal stories to offer a glimpse at the comedy of an overwhelmed life while encouraging us to discover the depths and heights of God's love and power.

Be empowered to find freedom in becoming overwhelmed with who God is-by learning to focus on what we know about God so that we can hold onto faith even when it seems that all is lost. For it is when an overwhelmed woman gives up the mission of me and exchanges it for the mission of God that being overwhelmed becomes a good thing.

Choose to bask in the abundance of the Father instead of the abundance of life as his unfathomable depths can surely replace our fathomable messes.

My thoughts

A Woman Overwhelmed is a gem of a book. Hayley DiMarco is a talented writer who speaks from the heart on a topic to which all of us can relate. Whether from circumstances beyond our control or from responsibilities/demands we’ve placed upon ourselves, being overwhelmed is surely something we’ve all experienced.

This is not a “how to” book; rather, as Hayley shares her life experiences and insights, I see myself more clearly. She’s refreshingly honest, open, and funny … “The truth is that whenever I’m not in control of the situation, I’m looking for any opportunity to take control simply because I know things are faster, safer, smarter and more comfortable when I’m in charge.” (p. 73)

Hayley’s statement in the introduction beautifully sums up the book … “I pray that you will find yourself so overwhelmed by the love of God that you don’t have the time or the desire to be overwhelmed by the circumstances of life.” The chapters are short and conclude with a “Thoughts to Ponder” section, making this perfect for devotional reading. With its humorous style, A Woman Overwhelmed is full of inspiration and encouragement. Here’s some of my favorite quotes …

“Life is messy. And running around trying to keep it constantly tidy is like putting your paint and brushes away after every stroke. It might be tidy, but your art will suffer.”

“Our life is not meant to overwhelm us, but instead we are to overwhelm the world with the Creator’s amazing grace.” (p. 42)

“When you are overwhelmed with perfection, you spend more energy regretting what you can’t do than doing what you can.” (p. 41)

“When God overwhelms your former view of the world with His glorious goodness, you can’t help but shout from the rooftops.” (p. 160)

“God’s sovereignty gives everything meaning, even our suffering. From disappointment to disaster, knowing that God’s omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence are equaled only by His infiniteness and love, gives us the freedom to joyfully allow the floor to slip out from under us and send us plummeting towards the ground. We know that we aren’t falling, but riding in His righteous right hand.” (p. 165)

Highly recommended.
